We offer half day and full day private charters to Molokini and/or the Makena Coast of Maui. This is a great option for groups of family and friends who would prefer not to be diving with unfamiliar divers and who enjoy the exclusivity of a boat to themselves.

Private charters also afford you a lot more flexibility in where we go, accommodating young children, divers with special needs, mixed groups of divers, introductory divers, snorkelers and passengers and specific requests outside of our normal schedule. A private charter is also optimum for dive clubs, photography clubs and classes, and weddings—underwater or on the boat.

A half day charter allows us ample time to do two dive destinations within the Molokini/Makena area, La Perouse Bay/Kaupo side or Olowalu/Sugar Beach (Mantas/WWII airplane). $1475 plus tax

A full day charter allows us ample time to do 3-4 dive profiles or to do 2-tanks at Lanai or Molokai. $2700 plus tax.

Shorter private charters are available in the afternoon for Whale Watching, and sightseeing upon the request.

Manta Quest
Manta rays can be found at many dive sites on Maui including the Makena Coast and Molokini, however in recent years they have been frequently found at a site off of Olowalu between Maalaea and Lahaina.

We offer this dive primarily in the afternoon because that is when the mantas are found. This dive is offered as a drift dive and is generally a 60 foot dive.

However, due to the summer trade winds, sometimes this dive is hard to guarantee. We need a minimum of 6 people to make it a go. We offer it by special request rather than on a a regular dive schedule.

WWII Airplane
This WWII Airplane was found as a dive site as recently as 2010. While we have tried to offer it as a regular attraction, the visibility and conditions have made it challenging to provide on a consistent basis. That, coupled with the fact that it is one relatively small plane in a sand channel, makes for little other to see than the sea life congregating on it. Still, if you are a WWII buff, this is a must do site….but unless you have enough diving buddies to do it with, we may not have enough other divers to do it.

60 foot depth.

Great as a private dive or with a minimum of 6 divers. We often couple this with our Manta Quest as they are in reasonable proximity to do on the same charter.

Lanai Cathedrals

Cathedrals I and II off the coast of the island of Lanai are offered as a private charter or for groups of 6 or more. These sites are unique in that the caverns are not right up against the shore so they are surrounded by water. These are not “caves” as there are entrances and exits on multiple sides, and the cracks and crevices reveal turquoise blue waters so that they look a little akin to stained glass windows—hence the name “Cathedrals.”

The Cathedrals dive sites may have a variety of reef fish surrounding them on the outside, but there typically is not a lot of sea life on the inside, rather the rock formations are the main attraction.

Because it is about an hour and half boat ride from Kihei, we offer Lanai as a private charter with a maximum of 8 divers.

How long does it take to get to Lanai?

Lanai is about an hour to an hour and a half by boat from the Kihei Boat Ramp. $2700 plus Tax

We welcome film crews, photography classes and expeditions! Most ofMakena Coast Dive Charter’s crew are professional photographers, videographers, and cameramen featured in numerous SCUBA Magazines, on NatGeo WILD, Discovery Channel, and the Travel Channel on television.

The Makena Mele is an excellent film crew support vessel for the waters off of Maui, Lanai and Molokai!

We also can arrange private underwater photography and videography classes for you or your dive club.

Call us to discuss the options!

We also offer photo packages with photos of your dive ranging in from $65-85. Be sure to let us know if you would like photos taken of your dive.

Whale Watching
The Humpback Whales migrate to the Hawaiian Islands every year to mate and birth. They start trickling in during late fall, begin showing up in earnest mid-December. By January they are here in great numbers and continue to frolic off the coast of Maui through April…with a few sightings into May.

After 30 years of watching the whales we still love to see them and sighting a brand new baby whale leaping out of the water is still a special treat.

What many people don’t realize is that the song of the Humpbacks can be heard underwater while scuba diving or snorkeling. They say the song changes every year and that all the whales seem to know the new tune. Get your ears underwater and you can listen in!

While every scuba charter between December and May is a “whale watching” charter as we stop to watch them on the way to and from the dive sites. However, we do offer private charters devoted solely to whale watching, as well. These are offered as a four hour morning charter  or as two or four hour afternoon charters.

Spreading Ashes in Maui Waters

The death of a loved one is never easy, but scattering their ashes in the beautiful crystal clear waters of Maui as a final resting place is  somehow comforting. All the waters of the world’s oceans are connected, so now, no matter where you dive, snorkel, swim or even just watch the sun set or rise over a beautiful ocean, you know your loved one is present.

How an ashes scattering works:

Since this is a private charter option, we customize the experience to meet your needs. This can be done in a one or two hour charter leaving from the Kihei Boat Ramp, performing the ritual and returning or you can combine it with a celebration of diving, snorkeling and/or whale watching (if it is the winter season.)

The cost ranges from $475 (plus tax) for one hour to $1495 for a full four hour charter which could include snorkeling, diving or whale watching.

If you want a minister to officiate, Eve Hogan (co-owner of Makena Coast Dive Charters) can assist you in either officiating or assisting you in finding the right person to meet your needs. If you want a musician, conch blower or any other services, Eve can help you coordinate the sacred event.

In Or Around the Sea Weddings

We offer Scuba Weddings! Take the Ultimate Plunge!

We are one of the very few places in Hawaii where you can get married underwater! Captain Steve Hogan’s wife, Eve Hogan, is a licensedwedding officiant and an avid diver with 20 years experience. She has performed several underwater weddings—including in the shark tank at the Maui Ocean Center, has been filmed for television specials and was featured in National Geographic Adventure Magazine for extreme weddings. She is also a relationship specialist and author of How to Love Your Marriage: Making Your Closest Relationship Work and The EROS Equation: A Soul-ution for Relationships.

Since she believes that it is important that you say and hear your vows, she will encourage you to do part of the ceremony is above water on the boat and complete the nuptials underwater using a combination of slates and sign language.

The ocean is a powerful metaphor for marriage, making the underwater wedding full of meaning. As Eve points out in the ceremony, “You have chosen to get married underwater, which is a perfect metaphor for maintaining your relationship. Remember that no matter how rough the surface conditions are, just a few feet below the surface the sea are calm and tranquil waters. Throughout your relationship, draw on this metaphor to give you strength. No matter how rough the surface is, no matter how upset you may get, just below the surface there is a sea of love-tranquil, calm, there for you to access when you need it.”

Requirements: You must be a certified diver for an underwater wedding. You will need to get your marriage license from a Maui licensing agent prior to the ceremony.

Costs: The cost of a scuba wedding varies significantly based on whether you are getting married on a private charter or a shared boat, how many people are coming with you, whether you want photography and/or videography and whether you want any other accoutrements like Cake, a toast, etc. (We don’t provide alcohol, but you can bring your own.) As a general ballpark figure, a private charter with the officiant and a dive leader, $2000. With the addition of photography OR videography, it would be closer to $2600, $3000. for both.

A beach wedding is $350 including the officiant, decorative certificate, beach permit, and customization of your ceremony.

Marriage licenses are somewhere around $75 and must be acquired prior to the ceremony.

Is an Underwater Wedding a little too extreme for you? Eve and Makena Coast Dive Charters are happy to offer you Maui Beach and Boat Weddings, as well.

Night Dives

Night dives are always exciting as the “night shift” of sea life is different than the “day shift.”

We typically do our night dives as a two-tank expedition with the first dive being a dusk dive and the second being after sunset, both at Molokini. We reserve our night dives for experienced scuba divers who have done night dives previously. Currently, we are offering night dives as private charters and by special request for groups, rather than as a regularly scheduled dive.

  • Call 808-874-1273 for more information and reservations for Scuba Diving Maui!

Please keep the time difference in mind! We are 2-3 hours earlier than the west coast and 5-6 hours earlier than the east.
